Here is the Deal...Why this training, Who is Tracy?

Meet the heart of Tracy Gantlin-Monroy, MDiv, LPC

I am available and motivated to share who I am, what I have and what I know with you. Brainspotting is necessary, especially in a time such as this. Brainspotting is an anti-oppression, non-compliance power-tool for healing. Brainspotting is relational and neurobiological inherently whereby we work "bottom-up". Our motto is simply this, "where you look affects how you feel." We use vision, the eyes for access into the brain and body.

As an American, Black bodied woman, acculturated by dominant cultured, White, God-loving, socio-economically upper middle-class persons during childhood, passionate about equity and inclusion, I was called to action. Since becoming the first Black female Brainspotting trainer in the world, my awesome, welcomed, burden has been without ceasing. Dr. David Grand is my mentor, friend and developer/founder of Brainspotting. Our initial encounter was at the very first Persons of Color training in Atlanta, GA at which I am the midwife.

The call to action came at no expectation and quite honestly, a huge surprise I had not prepared for. I started my Brainspotting journey with one desire, to heal the wounded while addressing my own wounds. (It's imperative, especially as clinicians, to do our work...starting with self...the idea here is "heal the healer.") I was resistant to participate with the Persons of Color project due to a lack of understanding; my initial thoughts were around segregation, separation which were all initial fears given my upbringing and belief in inclusion. I lacked understanding of the need for Persons of Color to have a sacred space due to our Nation's horrific history and the marginalized experience. For the record: BIPOC is an acronym for Black Indigenous Persons of Color and by no means represents "Anti-White." From my belief and demonstration, ALL people are created by the Creator! (Just saying for clarity)

Having grown up privileged, I had no idea what subordination, subjugation, lack of access, discrimination and the like really meant from an experiential perspective. Leaving home... my sweet spot of safety, familiarity, love, understanding and protection embodied through my upbringing seemingly became fleeting it the world at large. As I started to study, learn and experience, it became evident the remnants of the weaponization perpetrated on folks of my culture/race was imbued to many due to their sexuality, race, gender, socio-economic status, etc. Reluctantly I answered the call and became impassioned by the idea of inclusion for all in tandem with the beat of my heart and soul.

This reckoning of social identities, social location, American, woman, Black, educated, my bi-cultured son (Black & Guatemalan American) all came into the frame. The unrest of 2020 created a fear I had never imagined. I became afraid for me and my neighbors' democracy. Our Nation, the United States of America, became polarized with division unlike anything I had ever seen in my life time.

During this fretful time, the pandemic was claiming lives by the thousands, New York City was under siege, medical workers were risking their lives to provide care, George Floyd was murdered on camera, panic and isolation were common place, and we faced the greatest uncertainty ever. I was mortified, confused, scared, and desired for Americans to come together and not be separated by sex, race, religion, education, culture...I understood the importance of being American, being a good neighbor.

So here we are, in 2022. This is an opportunity to change the trajectory for ourselves and others. I received an email from a White person that want to learn how to be with non-White clients. She expressed a need to attend a BIPOC training. I explained to her the meaning of and for BIPOC trainings. Then realized, the reason I had received numerous emails from people I didn't know asking for consultation on being with folks. of color is simply this...professionally and personally, there are huge separation. Many of us have not sought "different from me" for interaction therefore, the division creates unawareness and awkwardness. Interestingly, clinicians are awakening to the fact of culture matters, acceptance matters, equity matters, inclusion matters and is a must.

Seminar Overview

Brainspotting is a powerful, focused treatment method that works by identifying, processing and releasing core neurophysiological sources of emotional/body pain, trauma, dissociation and a variety of challenging symptoms. Brainspotting is a simultaneous form of diagnosis and treatment, enhanced with BioLateral sound, which is deep, direct, powerful yet focused and containing.

Brainspotting identifies activated eye positions designated as Brainspots. Located through either one or both eyes, Brainspots are observed from either the "Inside Window" of the client's felt sense and/or the "Outside Window" of the client's reflexive responses (i.e., blink, eye twitches or wobbles, pupil dilation, quick breaths, and subtle body shifts).

Students will first learn the phenomenological approach that underpins strategies for Brainspotting, followed by strategies for identifying and processing Brainspots. Attention will be given to the utilization and integration of Brainspotting into ongoing treatment, including highly dissociative clients.

Brainspotting is adaptable to almost all areas of specialization. Brainspotting provides therapists with powerful tools which enable their patients to quickly and effectively focus and process through the deep brain sources of many emotional, somatic and performance problems.

Seminar Objectives

Through lecture, live demonstration and small group practice participants will learn to do the following:

Define the components of Brainspotting.

Utilize the techniques of "Inside window", "Outside window" and "Gazespotting".

Demonstrate the theories and practices of Brainspotting.
